5 out of 5 stars From someone who came from a kit lens this lens does its job   August 26, 2010

2 out of 3 found this review helpful

A couple months ago I decided to buy a DSLR camera after tinkering with a Canon XTi. Since then, I have bought a Canon XSi coupled with the 18-55mm kit lens. Eventually after 4-5 months I grew tired of using the 18-55mm and started seeking out a all around lens that boasted in sharpness and contrast. When I was looking at the lens I looked at 24-105mm f/4 L and the 24-70mm f/2.8 L I had a hard time deciding whether I wanted a bigger f/stop or longer range. I decided to go with the 24-70mm f/2.8 L since I figured the f/2.8 would help me out alot more. I got it the day before I went to Reno, NV and man! The images were amazing, sharp, and clear! I was able to shoot indoors without fail, something my 18-55mm couldn't do. When they say its the L glass that makes it expensive you better believe it. You get what you pay for. The lens is sturdy and not made of a plastic feel. I haven't experienced lens creep yet. Overall, this lens is a great all around walking lens. I won't lie, but this lens intimidates people. I walked into In - N - Out one day and people started asking me about photography equipment and etc. I can't stress how much I love this lens. I use this lens more than my 18-55mm. I know that my camera sees the lens as 1.6x crop sensor, but if you plan on upgrading your camera body to a full frame body in the future then this is a good investment.

5 out of 5 stars Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L   August 9, 2010

I absolutely love this lens! I consider it my "work horse" lens because it is good for almost anything that I have to photograph. With this lens and my 70-200mm f2.8 zoom, I'm ready for anything!

5 out of 5 stars OMG, this lens is the bomb!!   July 29, 2010

This is the 3rd Canon "L" series lens I've owned, but it's by far the best. Even amongst L lenses, the 24-70L is stunningly sharp. Maybe as sharp as a prime lens?? Photos look great at the wide range, with little to no distortion. Fully zoomed, it works fine too. The range from 24-70mm is versatile enough to be a great walkabout lens. Now I use it for about 80% of my shots (10% 17-40 f/4L and 10% 70-200 f/4L). Never thought I'd spend over $1k on a lens, but this one is worth every penny!

5 out of 5 stars All you would expect....   July 23, 2010

All that you would expect from a Canon L series lens. Very fast focus, true colors, sharp and just plain excellent lens. This is my second L series and I like the results even better than the 100-400mm!!!! This pair nearly covers the full range from 24-400mm with a small gap from 70-100mm that I can fill later. To say that I am satisfied really understates it. The f/2.8 of this lens gives great options for low light situations yet it does very well at all f/ stops. I bought it primarily for landscape/seascape use and usually am at f/11 or higher, but when I want to zero in and lift something from the background I have all the room that I need to do so.

5 out of 5 stars They call it the beast   July 22, 2010

This is the nicest standard zoom lens you'll find. It's sharp, high-contrast, and low aberration at nearly all zoom levels and apertures. If you're going to step your toes into Canon's L line, this is the place to start. Giving you five standard focal lengths (24, 28, 35, 50, and 70 mm) this lens is an ideal high-quality everyday lens. Further, the quiet USM autofocuses nearly instantly, and the full-time manual focus ring rotates like butter.

If I had to pick one problem with this, it would be the weight. At about 2.5lbs, it's surprisingly heavy, especially when you've been wielding it for several hours. Also, it's immense size grabs the attention of strangers, which depending on what you're doing, could be problematic.

But in the end, when what I'm doing demands high quality, this is the lens I rely on. It is the standard-zoom staple of my travel pack, and if limited to only what's attached to the camera, this is the lens that comes.
